SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner visited Shepherd University on Wednesday, November 19, to present a Centurion Award, recognizing the University’s more than 100 years of service to students, families, and communities.

During the presentation, Secretary Warner emphasized the significance of reaching a century of continuous operation and the role long-standing institutions play in shaping West Virginia’s economic and educational landscape.

“A lot can change over 100 years,” Warner said. “That’s why our office continues to identify businesses and institutions that meet all the criteria for the Centurion Award. So far, we’ve found about 220 organizations that have been serving their communities for a century or more across the mountain state.”

Shepherd University, founded in 1871 and serving as a public institution rooted in STEM and the liberal arts for more than 150 years, received the award in recognition of its enduring commitment to academic excellence, workforce preparation, and community engagement.

Shepherd President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix said she was humbled to accept the award on behalf of the University.

“Secretary Warner’s presentation underscores the vital role Shepherd plays as a hub for education, innovation, and economic development in the Eastern Panhandle,” Hendrix said. “Our University continues to serve as a connector—bringing together students, alumni, and local businesses to strengthen the region and advance opportunities for all.”

Presented through the WV Secretary of State’s Office and the WV Centurion Chamber of Commerce program, the Centurion Award honors the legacy, resilience, and community impact of century-old organizations. Award recipients receive an official certificate acknowledging their membership in the Centurion Chamber of Commerce and their founding date.
