SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University celebrated the opening of its new agribusiness center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 13.

The new addition to Shepherd’s Agricultural Innovation Center at Tabler Farm marks a significant step forward in the University’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, academic innovation, and regional collaboration.

The agribusiness center will serve as a hub for Shepherd students across multiple academic programs, while also offering resources and workshops for local growers participating in the University’s Agricultural Small Business Incubator and the broader agricultural community in Jefferson County and the Eastern Panhandle. The facility is designed to introduce new technologies and promote sustainable farming techniques to local growers and community members.

“The new agribusiness center will benefit students across multiple disciplines thanks to the dedicated individuals who came together to invest in the future of Shepherd University,” said Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix. “This facility is a testament to their vision and commitment to Shepherd and our mission to train the next generation of leaders and model citizens.”

U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito attended the ceremony, highlighting the importance of agricultural innovation and education in supporting local economies and advancing food sustainability. Her presence underscored the significance of the center as a regional asset.

Capito provided vital support for the program by securing more than $1.4 million in federal funding. She said the agricultural industry has changed, and specialized training and programs are critical

“It’s a highly technical, skilled business filled with innovation and excitement,” Capito said. “We’ve got to get the next generation excited about this. Not only do we feed ourselves we feed the world and they’re going to be doing that right here at Shepherd University.”

The University recognized Capito, along with several faculty and staff members, for their contributions to the project, including Dr. Peter Vila, Dr. Jeff Groff, Dr. Ben Martz, Dr. Brooke Comer, Mr. Matthew Ware, and Ms. Madison Hale. A group of dedicated volunteers who played a key role in the development of the center were also recognized, including Mr. Tom Barney, Ms. Molly Sutter, Mr. Lyle Rush, Mr. Paul Wilmoth, and Mr. Mark Kable of Kable Excavation.

The agribusiness center is expected to have a cascading positive impact on the health and well-being of the community by increasing access to fresh, local produce and promoting regenerative farming practices. It reflects growing enthusiasm among local residents and interest groups for organic foods, farm-to-table dining, and sustainable agriculture.
