SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVShepherd University’s Division of Student Affairs and Criminal Justice Lecture Series are hosting naloxone training on Wednesday, January 25, from 11:10 a.m.-noon in the Student Center Rumsey Gallery. The training is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

Naloxone, also distributed under nasal spray brand names Narcan® and Kloxxado®, and injectable Zimhi™, is used to reverse an opioid overdose.

During the training, West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Office of Drug Control Policy Region 2 Coordinator Stephanie Stout and WVU Medicine’s Community Outreach for Resources and Education Social Worker Caroline Wilson will train participants on how to administer naloxone via a nasal spray.

“With the growing opioid epidemic and high number of fatal overdoses in West Virginia, everyone should receive this training. You could save a life,” Stout and Wilson said.

The training will include information on how to identify an overdose and how to administer naloxone through nasal spray. Participants will be informed on what steps to take before, during, and after the administration of naloxone during an overdose emergency, including familiarization with contacting emergency services and an understanding of the Good Samaritan law that allows those in an emergency situation to assist as long as they are operating under good faith.
