SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s President’s Lecture Series will present Stephen A. Goldman, M.D., with a talk titled “Warriors in Peace: White and Black Union Veterans and the Fight for Equality in Post-Civil War America” on Tuesday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. The event is free and open to the public and will be available via Zoom.

Goldman will discuss how white and Black northern veterans sustained their dedication to the causes for which they had battled and continued the struggle for freedom and opportunity for every American in the decades after the Civil War. He will explore how Black veterans created the model of social activism based on military service that American citizen soldiers, sailors, and marines have emulated in modern times. The enduring power of veterans’ warrior identity will also be discussed.

Goldman is a psychiatrist with more than 30 years’ experience in academic/clinical medicine and public health, with a particular interest in the effects of war. An adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, he is a fellow of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Goldman is completing a multi-volume work on the Civil War, Reconstruction, race, the impact of combat and military service on veterans’ lives, and how they successfully reintegrate into civilian society via their enduring warrior identity.
