SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Criminal Justice Lecture series will feature Shepherd alumna Ashley M. Batten, assistant public defender, on Wednesday, November 17, from 1:10-2 p.m. via Zoom. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Batten has been a public defender in the 23rd Judicial Circuit of West Virginia since February 2016. Her entire practice has been working with juvenile respondents in both Berkeley and Morgan counties, handling more than 100 juvenile defense cases per year.
Batten graduated from Shepherd in 2011 and is a 2015 graduate of WVU College of Law, where she worked with the West Virginia Innocence Project. Batten was voted as one of the Top 40 under 40 in law in West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania by VerStandig Media in 2019. In 2021, she was awarded both the Thomas Stanley Memorial Award for Excellence in Public Defense in the 23rd Judicial Circuit and the West Virginia Public Defender Services Statewide Award for Excellence in Criminal Defense Scholarship.
