SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War will present a talk by Kate Egner Gruber, acting director of curatorial services at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, titled “Hidden Depth: Discovering Marginalized Narratives in Everyday Objects at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown” on Wednesday, November 3, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Artifacts play a critical role in helping museums tell stories about the past, but often artifact labels barely scratch the surface of their complex biographies. What happens when we dive deep below the surface to unpack historic objects’ layered meanings? By exploring artifacts at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, this lecture will uncover intriguing stories and historically marginalized narratives beneath the surface, and challenge the audience to dive deep in your own explorations of material culture.
The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation operates Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Since 2013, Gruber has served as a curator at Yorktown and as special exhibition curator for both museums. Gruber is currently the president of the Virginia Forum, a member of the State Historical Records Advisory Board, and a contributor to Emerging Revolutionary War and the American Battlefield Trust.
