Accounting Club hosts ‘Meet the Firms’ event, learn about federal government careers

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Accounting Club held its annual “Meet the Firms” event on September 30 in the Storer Ballroom. This event was organized by the Shepherd University Accounting Club to provide accounting students with the opportunity to learn more about the businesses and careers of the accounting field in the surrounding area. Participants included 25 individuals from 12 firms, the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and Shepherd University career services. The businesses had internships and full-time positions available for the students. Participating businesses included American Woodmark; Buchbinder Tunick & Company LLP; CohnReznick LLP; CoxHollidaYoung LLP; Cundiff & Associates, CPA, P.C.; Hottel & Willis PC; Kinnett CPAs, Inc; LSWG CPAs.; Owings & Company, PLLC; Rutherford & Johnson PC; SEK CPAs; and Yount, Hyde & Barbour, P.C.

Additionally, the Accounting Club hosted speakers from FEMA and the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) on September 28. FEMA representatives from the Winchester, Virginia, office discussed careers in the federal government, including the process of applying for jobs on the USAJOBS website. The representative from AGA discussed the process for obtaining the Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) certification. Twelve accounting students attended the presentation.
