SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice begins its monthly Criminal Justice Lecture Series for fall semester on Wednesday, September 15, with a talk by Dareick Barr, recruiter and officer with the United States Capitol Police, who will discuss his career as well as opportunities with the U.S. Capitol Police.
Barr has served with the U.S. Capitol Police since 2007. For the first 14 years, he was assigned to the department’s Capitol Division. He has performed functions such as VIP protection, securing special events, and emergency response. He has been assigned to the protection detail for four presidential inaugurations, 14 State of the Union addresses, the Pope’s visit, and several historic events. Currently Barr is assigned to the Office of Background Investigations and Credentialing as part of the recruiting team.
Two other Criminal Justice Lecture Series presentations are planned for this semester:
- October 20—Agent Jay Culley, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
- November 17—Senior Inspector Alphonso Wideman, U.S. Marshals Service.
“By offering public access to the Criminal Justice Lecture Series, participants gain an opportunity to learn more about specific and sometimes lesser-known careers in the justice system, as well as a chance to network with current field professionals,” said Dr. Janay Gasparini, assistant professor of criminal justice.
Each presentation is streamed live beginning at 1:10 p.m. and is free to attend. For a Zoom link, visit https://www.shepherd.edu/sociology/cj-lecture.
