SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Dana L. Costa has been named executive director of university communications at Shepherd University. She brings to the university nearly 30 years’ experience in higher education and private communications, public relations, and website and digital media management.

“Shepherd University is such a special place and I’m thrilled to now call the university and the town of Shepherdstown my home,” Costa said. “It’s an honor to join the team at such an exciting time in the university’s history—welcoming faculty and students back to campus post-pandemic and celebrating Shepherd’s 150th anniversary. I look forward to contributing to Shepherd’s successes for many years to come.”

Costa replaces Valerie Owens, who is retiring.

“Dana Costa will carry forward the legacy of Valerie Owens, who dedicated 35 years of her special talents to Shepherd,” said Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix, president. “Dana brings an exciting vision with Big Ten experience and ambitious goals to the university. We are enthusiastic about welcoming her to the university.”

Costa previously served as senior director for communications and marketing for Penn State College of Engineering. She also has experience as a marketing consultant and most recently served as vice president for marketing and communications for Intermax Networks, a privately-owned internet service provider headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Costa has a B.A. in journalism and an M.B.A. in product and market development and consulting from Penn State University.
