SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Society for Creative Writing in the Department of English and Modern Languages has partnered with The Twiza Project, an international collaboration of universities located in United States, Algeria, Morocco, and Kurdistan that creates spaces for college students to exchange writing on ideas of democracy, freedom, and justice.
The Society for Creative Writing selected Abigail McClung as the first Shepherd student member. McClung is a junior from Parkersburg majoring in English with an emphasis in creative writing. For this project, McClung will exchange writing with a university student in Algeria that explores ideas of social revolution, democracy, and inequality.
“This project is already so exciting, and we’ve barely started,” McClung said. “I can’t wait to get into things properly; this exchange of insight and information is so important in our current world and I’m honored to be a part of that exchange.”
“Shepherd University’s writing program is a site of important cultural exchanges, whether it’s between classmates, colleges, or through international partnerships like this one,” said Sadie Shorr-Parks, Society for Creative Writing director. “We don’t write just to show the world as it is, but to share a vision for a better world. We write to create a world with greater cultural, economic, and political freedoms.”
