SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Dr. Ann Marie Legreid, dean of Shepherd University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was installed as the president of Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars during the group’s 33rd Annual International Conference held at Shepherd May 31-June 1.
Henry Navarrete Mendez, a computer information technology major from Chantilly, Virginia, received the David Merchant International Student Award for Achievement. The award is given to an international student with superior scholastic achievement who participates in international activities on campus and in the larger community.
Mendez was one of two Shepherd students who gave poster presentations during the conference. His presentation was titled “Attitudes Toward Spanish-English Bilingualism by Native Spanish Speakers.” Michelle Reid, a global studies major from Harpers Ferry, presented “Vulnerability to Long-Term Displacement Following Natural Disasters.”
A number of Shepherd faculty and staff made presentations or participated in panel discussions during the conference, including Dr. Keith Alexander, associate professor of history; Dr. Denis Berenschot, associate professor of Spanish; Dr. Samuel Greene, assistant professor of political science; David R. Hixson, adjunct professor of sociology; Dr. Aart Holtslag, associate professor of political science; Dr. Rachel Krantz, associate professor of French; Dr. Sylvia Bailey Shurbutt, director, Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities; Siriki Diabate, international recruiter and admissions officer; Amy Garzón Hampton, Region III PRIDE coordinator/child welfare trainer; Maria Skowronski, director, intensive English language program; and Yin Star, director, study abroad program.
