SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — With education garnering overwhelming amount of attention during this year’s session of the West Virginia Legislature, Shepherd University is hosting an open dialogue about education in the state on Monday, March 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. “State of Education: A Community Dialogue” will feature panelists who will guide a community discussion. The event, which is sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Geography, Department of Political Science and Global Studies, TRiO Student Support Services, and Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities, is free and open to the public.
The dialogue will be facilitated by Dr. Chiquita Howard-Bostic, chair of Shepherd’s Department of Sociology and Geography. Members of the panel include Julie Abel, art teacher at Mountain Ridge Middle School in Berkeley County and a contributor to the book “55 Strong: Inside the Teachers’ Strike”; Hannah Geffert, a former Shepherd political science instructor, retired talk radio show host, and interested community member who raised seven children, all of whom graduated from West Virginia schools; and Michael Donnelly, Homeschool Legal Defense Association senior counsel and director of global outreach, and professor of constitutional law at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia.
