SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Four Shepherd University students and two professors received recognition during the 93rd annual meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science at West Virginia Wesleyan College April 7.
Morgan Cadle, Ranson, was recognized for Outstanding Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering Poster for “Solving Ordinary Differential Equations in Java.” Dallas Gianniny, Chandler, Arizona, was recognized for Distinguished Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering Poster for “Treatment strategy for responders in a combinatorial OXP and IL12 therapy based on a calibrated cancer model.” Samuel Thomas, Charles Town, was recognized for Outstanding Engineering, or Computer Science Presentation for “GPU Computing and its Applications in AI and Deep Learning.” Amaris Jalil, Charles Town, was recognized for Distinguished Environmental Biology Presentation for “Diquat Dibromide-induced cellular and developmental abnormalities in the pond snail Lymnaea palustris: Analysis of calcium dysregulation and cytoskeletal targets.”
In addition, Dr. Jordan Mader, assistant professor of chemistry, and Dr. Carol Plautz, professor of biology, were recognized as co-recipients of the first-ever West Virginia Academy of Science Member of the Year Award, and awarded lifetime memberships in the Academy.
A total of 18 students and six faculty members attended the meeting to present their work in oral and poster sessions.
Faculty who participated include Dr. Jacqueline Cole, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. Dan DiLella, professor of chemistry; Dr. Qing Wang, associate professor of mathematics; and Dr. Ruth Conley, associate professor of biology.
Students who participated were Brendan Jarrell, Shepherdstown; Ben Lanham, Ryan Quigley, Sierra Bradley, and Brian Crutchley, Martinsburg; Levi Parrett, Huntington; Melvin Bowers and Christian Burns, Hagerstown, Maryland; Parker Anthony, Barnesville, Maryland; Jacob Neterer, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; Nicolette Bruley, Centreville, Virginia; Allison Lott, Woodbridge, Virginia; Sneha Reddy, Glen Allen, Virginia; and Yitian Yao, Shanghai, China.
