Undergraduate Positions:

Resident Assistants – RAs

RAs are student leaders who support and advise residents living on-campus, creating positive communities and meaningful engagement to enhance the on-campus living experience.

  • The RA application for 2024-2025 will open in late Fall 2023. Interviews and decisions will take place early Spring 2024.
  • Interviews will occur early in the Spring semester. Hiring decisions will be delivered in February.
  • The department hires around 30 RAs each academic year.
  • Compensation includes full room and meal plan cost waivers. RAs who assist with extra projects or during University breaks are paid hourly.

Office Assistants

Office Assistants are student employees who work in the main Residence Life Office. Responsibilities include front-end customer service, answering phones, paperwork management, and other office functions. Students also assist in mail and package processing, delivery, and documentation.

  • Position opens are as needed. 
  • Compensation is an hourly minimum wage rate with a max of 25 hours per week.

Residence Hall Improvement Crew – RHIC

RHIC crew members are student employees who focus on facilities work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to painting, moving room items, furniture repairs, cleaning, and more.

  • Applications open each Spring semester for the Summer. Occasionally positions open during the academic year.
  • RHIC position numbers vary from year to year.
  • More positions are available in summer than during the school year.
  • RHIC members are compensated at an hourly minimum wage rate with a max of 25 hours per week.

Administrative & Overnight Conference Assistants – ACAs & OCAs

ACAs are summer employees who provide customer service to organizations using Shepherd’s residence halls during camps. Responsibilities include checking in and out conference attendees, preparing rooms, maintaining inventories, and more. OCAs provide on-call overnight customer service to these same groups.

  • Applications open in the Spring semester for summer student employment.
  • Open positions vary from summer to summer depending on need.
  • ACAs are compensated at an hourly minimum wage rate with a max of 25 hours per week.
  • OCAs are compensated with full room waivers for Summer terms.
  • ACAs may choose to hold the ACA and OCA position simultaneously.

Summer Resident Assistants

RAs are student leaders who serve the residents living on-campus (typically in Dunlop or Printz Apartments), creating positive communities and meaningful engagement to enhance the on-campus living experience.

  • Applications open each Spring semester for summer student employment.
  • Apply by visiting the University Jobs Site and looking under Student Employment Positions
  • Summer RA position numbers vary each year depending on need.
  • RAs are compensated with full room waivers for summer terms and live in the apartments.
  • Previous RA experience or being hired as an RA for the upcoming Fall is highly preferred.

Graduate Positions:

Hall Directors – HDs

HDs are graduate leaders who supervise the daily functions of Shepherd’s residence halls. HDs ensure positive communities and create resident engagement to enhance the on-campus living experience.

  • Applications open annually and as-needed. 
  • 12 Month Position, roughly 25 hours per week.
  • Position includes 16 credit waiver for Shepherd University graduate courses per academic year.
  • HDs are provided with an apartment, meal plan, access to free laundry, and staff/faculty parking.
  • HDs are permitted to have a partner live with them.
  • Candidates preferred to be admitted and enrolled in a Shepherd University graduate program.
  • Priority given to candidates in the College Student Development and Administration Program (CSDA).

Practicum & Internship

Practicum and internship opportunities are available to interested graduate students looking to gain experience in Residence Life, Housing Assignments, Facilities Management, Conferences Services, and more. Interns may be eligible for a room waiver depending on arranged duties.

Professional Positions

Associate Director of Residential Education and Communication

The Associate Director trains and supervises professional and graduate Hall Directors. Serving on the RLO Leadership team, the Associate Director optimizes communications with residents and develops marketing materials.
