SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War will commemorate Memorial Day by hosting a special event titled “West Virginians at War” on Monday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature historians, including several Shepherd students, representing soldiers from across three centuries holding firing and cooking demonstrations.
A wreath laying ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the War Memorial Building, 100 East German St., in conjunction with the dedication of a marker by the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. (PLEASE NOTE: The wreath laying ceremony had originally been scheduled for noon at the center.) From 2:30-4:30 p.m. the center will sponsor a guided walking tour of Locust Spring Hospital in Keedysville, Maryland, which was used as a field hospital after the Battle of Antietam.
“This is a very unique opportunity as Locust Spring is currently a private residence and not typically open to the public,” said Dr. James Broomall, center director. “The homeowners have graciously opened their doors to the George Tyler Moore Center and will provide an overview of the site as well as a walking tour of the property.”
