Interlibrary Loan Policy
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service through which Shepherd University students, faculty, staff, and Scarborough Society members may request books, articles, and audio/visual materials not available in Scarborough Library.
Before submitting a request, please check the Max Online Catalog to see if the item is available at Scarborough Library.
The following requests will not be processed:
- Materials available at Scarborough Library
- Books required for courses
- Materials to be placed on Course Reserve
The lending institution determines the loan period and can recall interlibrary loan items at any time.
The Library’s future borrowing privileges from other libraries are jeopardized when Shepherd University patrons do not return Interlibrary Loan items on time.
It is up to the lending institution to decide whether an item may be renewed. If you need an item for a longer period of time, you should request a renewal BEFORE the item is due.
To request an ILL renewal contact:

Fines for Late, Lost or Damaged Interlibrary Loans
A fine of $1.00 per day with no maximum limit will be assessed for all overdue interlibrary loan items. ILL overdue fines apply to all patron groups – faculty, staff, student, Scarborough Society. Please note: Interlibrary Loan items have a four day grace period. On the fifth day, a charge of $1.00 per item per day will be calculated from the due date until the day the item is returned.
When interlibrary loans are not returned and/or fines remain unpaid, the patron’s library privileges, ability to register for Shepherd University classes, and ability to receive transcripts will be revoked.
Students with outstanding balances of more than $5.00, will be blocked from registering for classes and transcripts will not be released until all financial obligations are met. Once the student has returned all overdue items and paid all outstanding library fines and fees, the library will release all holds. Students should allow one business day for release of a hold after all fines and fees have been paid.
Lost or Damaged Fee
In the case of lost or damaged items, the patron will pay the replacement charge imposed by the lending institution.
