Thanksgiving Baskets: Shepherd University is teaming up with the Berkeley Senior Center to gather items for Thanksgiving baskets to benefit seniors that are not able to get out or prepare a meal for the holiday. Gather dry goods, canned goods, and non-perishable food items fit for a delicious Thanksgiving Day dinner as listed on the grocery list. Grocery lists will be available in the Office of Student Engagement each October. For each donated Thanksgiving basket a $10 donation is requested to purchase a rotisserie chicken, and perishable items to prepare the dishes. The Office of Student Engagement will deliver the completed baskets to the senior center before Thanksgiving.
In 2015, we were able to donate #30 Thanksgiving baskets of food, rotisserie chickens and perishable items to Berkeley Senior Services.
Adopt-a-Family: The holiday season can be a very stressful time for families in the community that already struggle providing basic needs for their children. Help Shepherd University, give back to those in need each during this extra special time of year. Students, faculty, staff and the community can participate in any of these programs supported by the Office of Student Engagement. The Office of Student Engagement supports local programs and agencies that currently support holiday programs. We do not offer support or implement our own holiday giving program.
Angel Tags: Children can be “adopted” from the Office of Student Engagement. Necessity items as well as a few wish list items will need to be purchased for each child. These purchased gifts will be the only items this child receives over the holiday season so we request each item is purchased. It is suggested that multiple individuals work together to purchase all items to limit the financial burden on a single person.
In 2015, we were able to donate gifts for 12 angel tags. Needing clothing and toys were purchased for all children.
Stockings: Check out an empty stocking and fill it to the top for a boy or girl from infants to 13 years old. Stuff these mesh stockings with toys, arts and crafts, toiletries items, candy, hats, gloves, etc. Filled stockings should be labeled with the age group and gender clearly identified on the tag and returned to the Office of Student Engagement.
In 2015, we were able to collect stockings for 78 children.
Thank you to everyone that supported the Holiday Giving program this past year! We were able to make a big impact on our community!
