What are my Shepherd ID (SID) and PIN used for?

Your Shepherd ID (SID) is your main personal identification at the University.

Your Shepherd ID (SID) and Personal Identification Number (PIN) are used to log into the RAIL (Remote Access Information Line) system.  RAIL allows you to change your password, retrieve your SID, and change your PIN. You can access RAIL from the Shepherd home page navigation bar or type www.shepherd.edu/rail in the address bar of your web browser.

Your Shepherd ID (SID) is printed on the back of your Rambler Card. If you have an older Rambler card, your SID  is the last nine digits of your Rambler card number.  On the first login to RAIL, your PIN is your birth date in mmddyy format. (Example for May 1, 2006 - 050106). RAIL will ask you to change your PIN to a new one. It must be between 6 and 15 characters, and can be numbers, letters, or a combination of both. Remember it and do not write it down.

NOTE:
If you try to log onto RAIL with the incorrect PIN three times, you will be locked out even if you finally enter the correct information. Go to the Registrar's Office with photo identification to have your PIN reset to your birth date.

What are my Username and Password used for?

Your Username and Password are used to log into your email account, campus computers, Sakai, and other network resources. You cannot access RAIL (Remote Access Information Line) using your username and password.

Your Username is unique to you. Your Username is not your email address, but it does consist of the characters before the @rams.shepherd.edu in your e-mail address. The only way to know your username is by looking it up in the RAIL system.

Your Password should be 6-16 characters long. It should be a combination of upper and lower case letters, and numbers. You can retrieve your original password and change your current password by accessing RAIL. NOTE: This will not change your password to log into the email system. It is your original password the first time and whatever you change it to in the email system after that.
You can access RAIL from the Shepherd home page navigation bar or type www.shepherd.edu/rail in the address bar of your internet browser. You must use your Shepherd ID and PIN to log into RAIL. Remember you cannot access RAIL using your username and password.

What is RAIL and how do I access it?

The RAIL (Remote Access Information Line) system allows you to do many tasks, depending on whether you are a student or an employee. Students use RAIL to register for classes, check grades, view an unofficial transcript, check your financial aid, and other student services. Faculty can enter grades, access advisees' records, display and print class rosters, and other tasks.  Certain Staff members can view departmental budgets. Everyone can use RAIL to retrieve their Shepherd ID (SID) and username, and change their PIN and current password.

1.  To access RAIL, go to the Shepherd home page navigation bar and click on RAIL or type www.shepherd.edu/rail in the address bar of your web browser.

2.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on User Login

3.  Click OK or YES if a Security Alert window pops up.

4.  On the User Login screen, enter your SID in the User ID box and enter your PIN in the next box below. If this is your first login to RAIL, your PIN will be your birth date in MMDDYY format. Click on the Login button.

5.  If this is the first time you have logged into RAIL, you will be prompted to change your PIN to a new one. It can contain numbers, letters, or both. It must be at least 6 characters long, but not more than 15. Remember your PIN. For security reasons, DO NOT write this new PIN down or give to it to anyone. You will also be asked to enter a security question and answer. This will allow you to retrieve your PIN if you forget it. The answer to the security question is case sensitive.

6.  On the welcome screen, you can select to view information under Personal Information or any of the other menu items.

7.  To protect your privacy, click on the EXIT in the upper right corner and close your browser when you have finished viewing.

NOTE:
