What are my Shepherd ID (SID) and PIN used for?
Your Shepherd ID (SID) is your main personal identification at the University.
Your Shepherd ID (SID) and Personal Identification Number (PIN)
are used to log into the RAIL (Remote Access Information Line) system. RAIL allows you to change your password, retrieve your SID, and change
your PIN. You can access RAIL from the Shepherd home page navigation bar or type
www.shepherd.edu/rail in the address bar of your web browser.
Your Shepherd ID (SID) is printed on the back of your Rambler Card.
If you have an older Rambler card, your SID is the last nine digits
of your Rambler card number. On the first login to RAIL, your PIN is your birth date in mmddyy
format. (Example for May 1, 2006 - 050106). RAIL will ask you to change
your PIN to a new six digit number. Remember this number and do not write it down.
NOTE: If you try to log onto RAIL with the incorrect SID
or PIN three times, you will be locked out even if you finally enter the correct
information. Go to the Registrar's Office with photo identification to have your
PIN reset to your birth date.

What are my Username and Password used for?
Your Username and Password are used to log into your email
account, campus computers, WebCT and other network resources. You cannot
access RAIL (Remote Access Information Line) using your username and password.
Your Username is unique to you. Your Username is not your email
address, but it does consist of the characters before the @shepherd.edu
in your e-mail address. The only way to know your username is by looking it up in
the RAIL system.
Your Password should be 6-16 characters long. It should be a
combination of letters, numbers and printable special characters such as the
ampersand (&). You can retrieve your original password and
change your current password by accessing RAIL. You can access RAIL from the Shepherd home page
navigation bar or type
www.shepherd.edu/rail in the address bar of your internet browser. You must
use your Shepherd ID and PIN to log into RAIL. Remember you cannot
access RAIL using your username and password.
