Influenza at Shepherd University Colleagues: The Health Center is seeing a marked increase in students who have influenza-like illness (high fever, fatigue, congestion, sore throat, body aches, etc.) - as are other campus health centers in this region. You may have read or heard that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) has stated that influenza is more widespread and cases are more debilitating this year than in years past. Though we rarely recommend bed rest for students, we have done this much more frequently this year and we are treating symptoms more aggressively. One of the best ways to decrease the spread of influenza is to avoid crowds and groups of people when feeling ill. For ill students, faculty, and staff, this may mean avoiding classrooms, athletic practices and events, the Student Center, library, group meetings, and social events. I hope this brief summary of the current situation on Shepherd's campus will prompt understanding on the part of all when students, faculty or staff are absent due to influenza-like illness. NOTE: NO recommendation is being made, by us or any local health officials, to cancel classes or any other events. FYI: Flu shots are still available at the Health Center, by appointment only, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Cost is $20 (cash, check or Rambler). Sharon L. Stanley-Alden, RN, BSN Posted: 2/19/08
