SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Wind Ensemble and the Shepherd University Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will present Tonal Vision, an evening of music exploring the connections between several works of visual art and music, on Friday, February 19, at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center Theater.
General admission is $10; $5 for faculty and staff, Shepherd alumni, senior citizens, and students 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. There will be a pre-conƒcert lecture about the works beginning at 7:15 p.m. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and advance sales or reservations are not available. The box office will open one hour prior to each performance.
The Symphonic Band will perform “El Capitan,” a John Philip Sousa march; “Emperata Overture,” a band overture by Claude T. Smith; “Portraits,” three musical pictures of famous American composers by Jim Colonna; “Salvation Is Created,” the Russian Orthodox hymn from Pavel Tschesnokov; and “Vesuvius,” a piece depicting the eruption of the Italian volcano.
The Wind Ensemble will perform “Ecstatic Fanfare” by Steven Bryant; three movements from Aldo Forte’s “Van Gogh Portraits,” a musical depiction of three famous paintings by the Dutch artist; a transcription of “La Cathédrale engloutie” (The Engulfed Cathedral) by Claude Debussy; a modern work about trees in New York City, titled “City Trees,” by Michael Markowski; and a six-movement symphony depicting selected Japanese prints, titled “Symphony No. IV—Bookmarks from Japan,” by Julie Giroux.
The Symphonic Band is a large concert ensemble that provides a music-making experiences through the performance of significant wind band literature. Membership is open to all university students regardless of major, as well as faculty, staff, and the community. The Shepherd University Wind Ensemble is comprised of music majors and a few select non-majors.
