SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Chamber Singers, Men’s Choir, Women’s Camerata, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present the choral concert Fields of Gold Friday, March 28 at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center theater.
The varied program features works of modern influences, including pop and jazz, and many unusual pieces.
The Chamber Singers will perform “El Hambo,” a “Swedish Chef”-influenced work by Jaakko Mantyjarvi, “Autumn” by Jussi Chydenius, “Fields of Gold” by Sting, and “Double, Double, Toil and Trouble.” The Camerata will sing pieces for choir and two pianos, including Ola Gjeilo’s “Gloria” and Z. Randall Stroope’s “Song to the Moon.” The Men’s Choir will present a traditional music for a capella men’s ensemble, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The concert concludes with a jazzy arrangement of Toto’s “Africa.”
The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Erik Jones, director of choral activites at Shepherd, is amostly a cappella ensemble, concentrating in masterpieces of the 20th century. The ensemble is made up of between 20 to 24 students each year. While most of the members are vocal majors, other music majors and students from around the campus are welcome to audition. The Women’s Camerata is an ensemble of 30 to 35 female singers, comprised of voice majors, music majors, and many students from other disciplines at Shepherd. The Men’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Robert Tudor, chair of the Department of Music and director of vocal studies, is an ensemble of 12 to 15 male voices singing jazz, doo-wop, barbershop, and classical male choir literature.
Concert general admission is $10; faculty staff, Shepherd alumni, senior citizens, and students 18 and under are $5; and Shepherd students and Friends of Music MAC cardholders are free. Admission and seating is first-come, first-served basis and advance reservations are not available. The box office opens one hour prior to performance.
