SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Two Shepherd University English students won awards at the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention March 21-24 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Brianna Maguire, Paw Paw, won first place and a $300 prize in the category of critical essays about this year’s Sigma Tau Delta common reader selection, Cristina Henríquez’s “The Book of Unknown Americans.” Kylie Krummel won an honorable mention and a $50 prize for fiction.
Maguire and Krummel were among six Shepherd students who made presentations at the English honor society conference.
“This year, we sent more students to the convention than we ever have before,” said Dr. Heidi Hanrahan, associate professor of English. “All six of our students who applied were accepted—and the selection process is rigorous and competitive.”
The students who presented are Claudia McCarron, Charles Town, “Uncle Tom’s Prophetess,” critical essay; Olivia Barrett, Kearneysville, “The Trouble with Maidens,” critical essay; Gabrielle Hersey, Delray, “Collected Poems of Tranquil Reverie,” poetry; Brianna Maguire, Paw Paw, “Borders in Henríquez and Anzaldúa,” critical essay; Michaela Keyser, Hagerstown, Maryland, “Scarlet Tears,” fiction; and Kylie Krummel, Fishers, Indiana, “Lather, Rinse, Repeat,” fiction.
