SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — As part of its arts advocacy and service learning project, the Shepherd University senior music seminar class will present a concert “The World’s Fair: Around the World in 60 minutes!” on Monday, December 8, at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center’s W.H. Shipley Recital Hall.
Students from the senior seminar class for music majors will perform works from around the world that will include vocal solos and compositions for violin, clarinet and other small chamber ensembles. The program will be comprised of Irish folk music, Appalachian folk songs, and Indian ragas. It will also include violin duos by Bartók, two Cuban guitar pieces by Leo Brouwer, French-Canadian songs by Emile Vuillermoz, Argentinean songs by Alberto Ginastera, and Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5.
The concert is free and open to the public, however donations will be accepted for Imagine No Malaria in partnership with Asbury United Methodist Church of Shepherdstown. Imagine No Malaria is an organization that works to eradicate the disease around the world by distributing bed nets, educating the public, and improving diagnosis and case management.
“As a culminating project in the music capstone course, the students were tasked with creating a service-oriented event that promotes the arts,” said Dr. Scott Beard, professor of music and dean of graduate studies and continuing education. “Arts advocacy is an important part of being a musician, and the ability to organize and put together concert events is an important career skill.”
