SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Scarborough Society, sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation, and Scarborough Library are hosting a dedication of a new community reading room on Sunday, March 25, at 4 p.m. Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix, Shepherd president, and Ray Alvarez, Scarborough Society president, will make remarks and there will be a presentation by Shepherdstown poet laureate Hope Snyder. The event is free and open to the public.
Renovation of the room, which is located on the main floor where copy machines used to be located, was funded through the Scarborough Society, with a match from the Shepherd Success Fund.
“This room is intended to create a community gathering space for members of the Shepherdstown and university community to take advantage of the collections that we have here at the Scarborough Library, including the periodicals, current fiction and nonfiction books, as well as DVDs that we have through our lease programs,” said Rachel Hally, coordinator of collections. “It will provide a place to enjoy the collections and learn more about what we have to offer at the library.”
The room will have a rotating collection of books, including those written local authors and poets.
“It shows that we have a wealth of local talent and this highlights what they do and brings names and faces together,” Hally said
“I think it gets more people into the library and creates more synergy with the community at large and the university,” said Dr. Laura Renninger, interim library dean. “Members of the community, who are eligible to get a library card, know they have a home here and are welcome anytime.”
