SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — In celebration of Native American History month, the Performing Arts Series at Shepherd and Multicultural Student Affairs invite the entire community to attend the Red Hoop All-Nations Pow Wow on Saturday, November 12, from noon-6 p.m. in the Shepherd University Student Center.

Organized by the Reed Brown, Jr., and Winters families of Wanabee, South Dakota, this event is intended to demonstrate the interconnection of all people in a spirit of oneness. The event will feature intertribal dances, colorful regalia from diverse tribal communities, drumming, and music.

Dancers and singers are expected to arrive from several states, representing many Native American tribes. The Medicine Horse Singers will serve as the host drum. Charlie Under Baggage will serve as head man and Jennifer Under Baggage will serve as head woman.

Brown is an Oglala Lakota who was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. His ancestors include the famed Sioux Chief Red Cloud, the medicine man Chips, and the Moytoy line of Cherokee chiefs. Brown is a frequent visitor to Shepherdstown and has family connections in the area.

In addition to the dancing and music, Native American crafts and native food will be available for purchase. Native American author, Anita Jo Shifflet will also be available to sign her book “A Lumbee Gershom,” a memoir of her life as a member of the Tuscarora-Lumbee Indians in Robeson County, North Carolina.

Admission to this event may be paid at the Student Center Storer Ballroom on the day of the event. There will be no advance ticket sales. The cost is $5 for adults; $3 for children; and free to Shepherd University students with a valid Rambler ID. For group rates or donations, contact Katherine Hutson at bearandhawk@gmail.com.
