Nursing students visit Capitol Hill to lobby on health care issues

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Nursing education students from Shepherd University spent time in Washington, D.C., March 1 lobbying members of Congress on issues that are important to their profession.

The 46 students were accompanied by Dr. Michael Groves, assistant professor of nursing education. They started the day at the headquarters of the American Nurses Association in Silver Spring, Maryland, getting a legislative briefing. They then traveled to Capitol Hill to visit with members of West Virginia’s and Maryland’s congressional delegations or their staff to discussed healthcare issues including the current opioid addiction crisis, workplace violence, neonatal abstinence syndrome, support for mental health facilities, and the establishment of a nationwide prescription monitoring program.
