Students at Marlowe Elementary School participate in the SNAP-Ed indoor garden program.
Shepherd’s SNAP-Ed program installed an indoor garden in Berkeley County’s Marlowe Elementary School cafeteria on November 21. Students were able to plant seeds for various herbs like basil, parsley, and sage in pots. The pots were put on shelves in front of the cafeteria windows under grow lights so the children can water their plants and watch them grow.
Harlee Marsh, of Shepherdstown, and Emily Gilmore, of Frederick, Maryland, SNAP-Ed AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, worked alongside Marlowe Principal Amanda Stevens and several parent volunteers to help the children plant the seeds. Gilmore told the children their plants will probably sprout and begin growing by January. The herbs will be used by the cafeteria staff in lunch food that’s served there.
