Appalachian Studies Association Conference

Two students in the Appalachian Studies Program presented their projects and research at the 2018 Appalachian Studies Association conference April 5-8 in Cincinnati. Breanna Gladden (l.), a communications major from Shepherdstown, presented a paper titled “Finding John Henry: Examining the Legend, the Ballad, and the Man,” and Cameron Mallow, a history major from Cabins, presented a paper titled “The Swamp Dragon Home Guard and the Civil War in West Virginia.”

West Virginia Academy of Science

Morgan Cadle was recognized for Outstanding Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering Poster; Dallas Gianniny was recognized for Distinguished Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering Poster; Samuel Thomas was recognized for Outstanding Engineering or Computer Science Presentation; and Amaris Jalil was recognized for Distinguished Environmental Biology Presentation. Dr. Jordan Mader and Dr. Carol Plautz were recognized as co-recipients of the first-ever West Virginia Academy of Science Member of the Year Award and awarded lifetime memberships in the Academy.

North Central Sociological Association Conference

Dr. Robert Anthony (r.), assistant professor of sociology, and Dr. Chiquita Howard-Bostic (l.), associate professor of sociology, presented their working paper titled “Teaching Race and Racial Inequality in Online Courses” at the North Central Sociological Association’s annual conference in Pittsburgh on April 7. Shepherd alumna Brooke Sowers, Martinsburg, a former student in Anthony’s senior thesis course, also presented her paper titled “The Prevalence of Bullying Among Obese or Overweight Adolescents.” The paper was based on research she did about the relationship between obesity and bullying.

Differential Equations Modeling Competition

A team of three students from Shepherd competed April 21 against teams from four other schools (U.S. Naval Academy, Montgomery College, Hood College, and Frederick Community College) in the Differential Equations Modeling Competition. Brian Crutchley, Yitian Yao, and Heidi Reichert represented Shepherd. The three presented their solution to a recycling problem involving the separation of paper and cardboard and placed second out of the five teams who competed.

President’s Lecture Series

Dr. Jonathan Pellish, agency electronic parts manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, discussed “The Sun and Outer Space as a Natural Hazard” on April 24 as part of the President’s Lecture Series.
