SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War is hosting an open house on Saturday, June 10, from 1-4 p.m. The event will feature a keynote address by Dr. John E. Stealey III, Shepherd Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History.
Dennis Frye, chief historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, will introduce Stealey, who will give a talk from 2-3 p.m. about “How Stonewall Jackson Rode Into Clarksburg: Statuary and Pathological Memory in West Virginia.”
Stealey taught history at Shepherd for 42 years. His general fields of research and specialization include American economic history, the southern Appalachian region, American legal history, black migration and educational development in the post-Civil War era, and post-Civil War border states and the Reconstruction south.
The open house provides the public an opportunity to tour the George Tyler Moore Center and learn about what it offers. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.
