SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Two fundraising events hosted by Shepherd University students during the spring semester raised more than $5,000 for charity.

The Wellness Center and the Program Board sponsored the Color for a Cure Fun Run, an end of the semester celebration on April 13. More than 100 students and community members participated in the fun run on a course from West Campus to East Campus set up by Jennifer Seeley, Wellness Center assistant director. During the run, student volunteers showered participants with brightly colored powders. They crossed the finish line at the East Campus amphitheater circle where a slip-n-slide, obstacle course, mechanical shark, DJ, and final color toss awaited. The event, which was free for students, raised $1,840 in donations for Shepherd’s Relay for Life.

“This event is a favorite of our students since it raises money to fight cancer while also allowing students to release stress and celebrate spring right before final exams,” said Rachael Meads, director of student activities and leadership.

Students from Shepherd’s Program Board and ALLIES organization held the 15th annual Drag Show Charity Fundraiser event on March 23. More than 350 students and community members gathered in the Student Center for a program featuring an evening of community fellowship, comedy, and entertainment by illusionists performing as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, and more. While there was no admission charged, more than $3,800 was raised through a silent auction and donations for Hagerstown Hopes, a nonprofit organization that works to bridge the gap between the straight and LGBTQ+ community.
