SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music Salon Series sponsored by Jefferson Security Bank kicks off its 2017-2018 season on Thursday, October 26, rgot 8 p.m. in the Frank Center W.H. Shipley Recital Hall with a performance by Slovenian-born concert pianist Rok Palčič.
Palčič is active as a soloist, chamber musician, pedagogue, and competition juror. His performances at festivals, as well as prizes from national and international competitions, have taken Palčič to venues across Slovenia, Italy, France, Croatia, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. The program will include Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959,” and Prokofiev’s “Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 83.”
Other Salon Series upcoming concerts are:
- January 11, 2018—Jason Solounias, an award-winning pianist who will perform a program will that includes Villa-Lobos’s “Bachianas Brasileiras,” Schumann’s “Symphonic Studies,” Debussy’s “Image Book,” and Stravinsky/Agosti’s “Firebird Suite.”
- February 1, 2018—Joseph Regan, tenor; Melanie Regan, mezzo soprano; and Joseph Satava, pianist, will perform “Death of the Romantics: A Musical Walk through the Changing World of European Art in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries.” The repertoire will include opera arias and art song selections that examine the ways in which the upheaval of the Gilded Age radically changed how artists thought about and expressed the meaning of life, death, love, and spirituality during this tumultuous time in European history.
- March 1, 2018—Argot String Quartet, a classical ensemble based in Frederick, Maryland, will perform Beethoven’s “Quartet Op. 18 n. 4 in C minor,” Dvorak’s “American Quartet,” Foote’s “Nocturne and Scherzo for Flute and String Quartet,” and Piazzolla’s “Four for Tango.”
- March 22, 2018—Atlantic Reed Consort, a quintet made up of oboe, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, and saxophone will perform contemporary literature for the reed quintet, exploring 20th and 21st century composers like Philip Glass, Ned McGowan, Jessie Montgomery, John Elmquist, and a new work by former Shepherd faculty member Nathan Lincoln-DeCusatis.
