                                2020 Year of the Nurse

Welcome to the School of Nursing at Shepherd University!

We are thrilled to be celebrating 2020 as the Year of the Nurse! This national celebration is in recognition of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday and her contributions to the founding of nursing as a profession. We invite our friends and alumni to contribute to the program in recognition of this historic time and in celebration of our accomplishments in contributing to the health and well-being of those to whom we serve. Contributions may be designated for the School at the University Foundation’s website: www.shepherduniversityfoundation.org

With the University restructuring in August 2019, we are celebrating our transition from a department to the School of Nursing. The restructuring places the School of Nursing within the College of Nursing, Education and Health Sciences. These changes have been embraced by students and faculty and have positioned the School as one of the largest programs on campus.

We are proud to be celebrating 33 years of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and our fifth year of our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Our patient centered BSN curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skill, and understanding necessary to practice in all areas of professional nursing. In addition, our RN to BSN is taught as a hybrid seated cohort. The BSN to DNP and the MSN to DNP curricula are designed to produce Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) leaders who embrace health care reform and are advocates for vulnerable populations. We would be thrilled to have you visit as we celebrate new achievements and opportunities.

We invite you to visit our 37,000 gross square foot, two-story building which houses specialized nursing classrooms, 120-seat lecture hall, five simulation labs (acute care, critical care, mother-child, pediatrics and independent living), office space, conference rooms, student study center, computer lab, and general purpose classrooms. This facility was designed to provide students with the modern tools to meet success for nursing education today.

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at Shepherd University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street, NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791.

Take some time to read through our nursing curriculum. If you have any questions please call our office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at 304-876-5341.

NOTE OF INTEREST
The late West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd obtained the federal funding to build a state-of-the-art nursing building, named Erma Ora Byrd Hall in honor of Senator Byrd’s late wife. Dedication ceremony of the nursing building at Shepherd University was on June 12, 2007.

The University houses the only state-supported baccalaureate nursing program in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. More than 400 students are enrolled at Shepherd University as nursing or pre-nursing majors. Our graduates have gone on to distinguished careers not only in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, but across the entire state, country, and internationally.
