SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Area high school students may discover their passion for health care this summer when the Shepherd University College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Nursing hosts its Healthcare Career Exploration Summer Workshops.
The free workshops, sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC), are open to any students who will be in high school this fall.
Participants will get an inside look at careers in health care, including nursing, medicine, and research, through hands-on activities in Shepherd’s science and skills labs to explore various aspects of health care.
Dr. Lisa Zerull, assistant professor of nursing and faculty coordinator for the event, said the workshops cover many topics related to the field.
“Students will explore animal anatomy, identify microorganisms under a microscope, auscultate heart and lung sounds, apply math for medications, and even participate in a Code/cardiac arrest simulation,” Zerull said.
Last year, the Shepherd University School of Nursing hosted the workshop. Zerull said the program has expanded due to growing interest in health and medical careers beyond nursing.
“We want to cast a larger net of interest to include pre-med, science majors, and anyone else who may also have an interest,” she said.
Attendees will receive a free stethoscope and T-shirt.
Three one-day workshops will be held on June 10, July 9, and August 5 in Erma Ora Byrd Hall and the Robert C. Byrd Science and Technology Center.
Students may register online at www.shepherd.edu/healthcare.
