SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Registration is now open for early childhood music classes through Shepherd University School of Music Community Division for the 2021 summer session that runs June 15 through July 13. The classes will take place in the Frank Center. Students and accompanying caregivers will be required to wear masks and follow all current university COVID-19 protocols while on campus.

Musical Discoveries for ages 18 months-3 years with an accompanying parent/caregiver will be on offered Tuesdays from 4-4:30 p.m. This in-person interactive class for children and caregivers will introduce the young student to the rudiments of music. The class will explore songs, echo songs, creative movement, rhymes, and finger-play. Students will play a large variety of rhythm instruments such as drums, rhythm sticks, wood blocks, and triangles. Tuition is $62 for the five-week session.

Music for Preschoolers for ages 3-5 years with an accompanying parent/caregiver will be offered Tuesdays from 3:15-4 p.m. This in-person class is designed to prepare the child for later instrumental studies or voice lessons. The group will play wood, metal, and shaker instruments, sing songs and echo songs, develop listening skills, and work with creative movement and circle dances. Since younger children love to observe and copy older children, older students will help lead the group in musical activities and songs. Tuition is $72 for five-week session.

The classes are taught by Frauke Higgins, who holds a master’s degree in music education and has more than 30 years of experience as an early childhood music educator and piano instructor.
