Early Education

Join the Shepherd University community to imagine your future as an early childhood educator; learn new knowledge and develop new skills that will inspire young children to be the best they can be. Learn from your peers, skilled practitioners, and experienced professors. Participate in a wide variety of practically oriented courses integrating current research, recommended practices, and hands-on field experiences.

This 120 credit degree program leads to a certification in PK-K. It includes Core Curriculum coursework in the liberal arts and sciences, Specialty Studies courses in content areas, and Professional Studies courses in teaching theory and pedagogy. Generally, the first 60 credits are offered at the Shepherdstown Campus and the last 60 credits are offered at the Martinsburg Center.

Early Education coursework includes three semesters with practicum experiences in a variety of settings and culminates with a student teaching internship in both pre-kindergarten and kindergarten settings. Students may begin the program of study as a freshman or transfer with eligible prior coursework.

Early Education Endorsement

A PK-K endorsement may be added to the elementary education K-6 program.
