SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Two Shepherd University professors and an alumna made presentations at the North Central Sociological Association’s annual conference in Pittsburgh on April 7.
Dr. Robert Anthony, assistant professor of sociology, and Dr. Chiquita Howard-Bostic, associate professor of sociology, presented their working paper titled “Teaching Race and Racial Inequality in Online Courses.” Their research explores how the online format can be used to provide students with a unique learner-centered curriculum and creative teaching tools that allow them to engage the topic of race. The online curriculum is based on a theory of breaking resistance that encourages students to gain a comprehensive understanding of social structural forces contributing to racial inequality.
Shepherd alumna Brooke Sowers, Martinsburg, a former student in Anthony’s senior thesis course, also presented her paper titled “The Prevalence of Bullying Among Obese or Overweight Adolescents.” The paper was based on research she did about the relationship between obesity and bullying.
