Kylie Riggleman- First-Generation Student Profile

Kylie Riggleman, Class of 2020

Why was it important for you to attend college?

It was important for me to focus on my dream to become a Registered Nurse and to do this, I had to attend college. I have also always wanted to attend college since high school and Shepherd seemed like the perfect fit as a senior applying to colleges.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

The greatest challenge during college has been nursing school and making friends. TRIO has helped me spread my wings a little and meet different people by setting up TRIO events and having/being a peer mentor.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

My family and Michelle Ricketts have helped me the most throughout college. College was not easy for me at the beginning and without these certain people in my life, I am unsure of where I would be today. I am very grateful.

What are your career goals?

I am planning to work in a hospital to gain experience to increase my confidence as a registered nurse.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

I love to craft with my Cricut that I received for Christmas. I have fallen in love with it! I also enjoy going on a hike, when it is the perfect weather.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

I am so grateful to go to a university that supports and cares about students who come from low-income families or who are first-generation students. TRIO has influenced me to work harder and harder reminding myself that I am the first in my family to get a college degree.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

You made it despite the challenges that you have had along the way. Enjoy it and relax! Be proud of the person you have become during these past few years.
