Austin Carr- First-Generation Student Profile

Austin Carr, Class of 2023

Why was it important for you to attend college?

It was important for me to attend college to better my life and do something my family could not.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

The greatest challenge for my college career so far is the class Political Conduct 1, because I have never written a research paper before.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

What has helped me the most in college so far is my friend’s support when things get tough because this year has had a lot of ups and down due to situations with other friends. Also, TRIO has helped a lot by distracting my mind from reality so I can just focus on schoolwork.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are to obtain my bachelor’s degree in political science then get my master’s and doctoral degrees in California.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

My favorite hobbies are to watch animes (mainly Sailor Moon right now) and read books (preferably LGBTQIA+ books). I am currently working with make-up to start doing drag, and most of all I love playing video games.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

Honestly being a first-generation student is amazing because we get to meet students just like us in TRIO, our own little area at the college. This program is not just about the meetings- it’s also about creating a family within the college program life.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

Hold on- even though life may be difficult now, things will always get better. When it comes to your friends now, just remember the oracle; he will set you free.
