Sonia Chavez- First-Generation Student Profiles

Sonia Chavez, Class of 2023

Why was it important for you to attend college?

For one, I value my education because I know that it’s something not everyone gets to have. Also, I believe my skills and abilities will grow and open many doors for me in the future. Not only that, but it would be a way for me to accomplish a goal I never thought I’d get to. I was always seen as the dumb one in my family, so I never thought I’d get this far. But look at me now! I’m really happy and grateful. Lastly, it would be a way for me to show my gratitude towards my mom and dad. They have given me everything and so much more and I plan on returning the world to them. This is just the beginning.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

The greatest challenge I’ve experienced in college so far is honestly a challenge with my anxiety, confidence, and the fact that I don’t reward myself enough. I struggle with anxiety whenever I do important exams. It stresses me out because I study so much but once it comes down to the test, everything leaves and I start freaking out. I’ve been controlling it a lot better though. On the other hand, something else I’ve been struggling with is self-confidence. Whenever I turn assignments in, I always feel like I don’t do well or I didn’t give it my all. However, once the grades come back, I don’t reward or give myself enough credit! Sometimes I forget to treat myself for all the challenges that come with being a full-time student, daughter, aunt, friend, girlfriend, sister, etc. KEY: REWARD YOURSELF DESPITE HOW BIG OR SMALL THE ACHIEVEMENT IS.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

Definitely the support from those who love and want the best for me and the Frada L. Fine scholarship. My mother is always coming through with deep meaningful talks, warm food, great support, and best of all her friendship and love! This woman is my rock and I absolutely love her to death. On another note, the Frada L. Fine Family Scholarship has helped me a lot financially because it took a lot of weight off of mine and my mother’s chests. We don’t worry about anything and it makes me focus more on my education.

What are your career goals?

I’d love to be a marriage and family counselor.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

I haven’t done it in a while, but I enjoy doing abstract paintings, photography and playing around with makeup on my free time.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

For one, I had a lot of maturing to do. Being first-generation means being the first one in your family to attend college; therefore, no one knew what to expect. I’ve learned a lot and I know I got the hang of it now. It has also taught me how to be independent. In college no one asked for my mother anymore. Now it’s all me so I’ve learned how to do things myself.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

I would tell her that I’m proud of her for having that drive, love, and motivation to keep going to school. I can’t emphasis enough how proud I am of her for accepting and adapting to her new surroundings and for always remaining positive despite how difficult it was at first. I hope you keep all of this going because I know you got bigger plans to accomplish. Keep it pushing! DO NOT GIVE UP.
