Sofia Prado- First-Generation Student Profile

Sofia Prado, Class of 2022

Why was it important for you to attend college?

My parents sacrificed a lot to come to this country so my brother and I could have a better future. It was important for me to further my education to make sure that their hard work wasn’t in vain. I want to give my family a better future and demonstrate to others what I am capable of.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

My biggest challenge has been trying to figure out what the next step is to get to my career. Not only am I a first-generation college student but I also want to go into the medical field. Figuring things out myself has been a challenge but I have a good support system around me that helps me know that I will accomplish my dreams no matter what.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

Being a part of different organizations, especially TRIO, has helped college get easier for me. Having the support of my peers, professors, faculty members, and my family has helped me get through difficult times at college.

What are your career goals?

I want to be a Pediatric Surgeon and I want to help children around the world. I hope to go back to Peru and help those in need. Growing up, I witnessed a lot of poverty in my country and it has always been my goal to make sure that I can give back to my community.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

I am part of Alpha Sigma Tau, a social sorority, Medlife, and Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

It has made me stronger and more independent. I have become more motivated to graduate and accomplish my goals. I have more confidence in myself and know that with hard work anything is possible.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

To continue working hard. Things will get harder, but we are not quitters and we will accomplish our goals. Remember the reason why you started and giving up won’t fix anything. You will accomplish your dreams!
