Tobey Spates- First-Generation Student Profile

Tobey Spates, Class of 2022

Why was it important for you to attend college?

I needed to better myself and step outside of my comfort zone.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

Classwork and procrastination because it can be really challenging to make myself sit down and have to study.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

Talking about whatever adversities I’m facing. Talking has really helped me learn how to overcome my shortcomings. It also feels really good to not internalize everything.

What are your career goals?

I want to become a great investigator and an ever better advocate for people with disabilities.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

I love to drive, write, read, lift weights, rap, and collect Magic The Gathering and Yu-Gi- Oh cards.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

I’ve just learned that being a first-generation college student is a huge step toward bettering myself. One day, I want to adopt a child with down-syndrome, and I want to be able to show my child that you really can accomplish anything you put your mind to. In fact, I want to be that role model for any child with any type of disability. I believe we are the legacy that we leave behind, and mine will be that no matter what comes your way, you can be and do anything you set your mind.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

This is just the beginning. It’s going to get even more difficult, and you need to do everything you can to be ready for it.
