Valerie Martinez Ramos- First-Generation Student Profile

Valerie Martinez Ramos, Class of 2023

Why was it important for you to attend college?

I needed to attended college for my parents; no one else in our family and extended family has ever had any higher education. I wanted to be an example for my nieces and show them that they can achieve anything.

What has been the greatest challenge so far in your college experience?

Trying to talk to my mom about issues or struggles that I face and she couldn’t provide the answer because she had no experience. I’ve been forced to figure things out on my own.

What has helped you the most so far in college?

TRIO has helped me so much, from finding scholarships to helping me write my resume. TRIO has allowed me to become comfortable with the college environment and they’ve helped me answer those unknown questions. I have developed a sense of security being in TRIO. I spend most, if not all, of my time in the TRIO office, to the point that they worry when I don’t show up!

What are your career goals?

I want to have my own business. I want to be in control of my own things in whatever it is I decide to pursue.

Outside of academics, what are your hobbies/extracurricular activities?

I love to read and learn new things. I like to be a part of things bigger than myself. I also enjoy being a part of groups who have the same ambitions as I do.

How has being a first-generation student influenced you?

I have become a different person. I can be myself in college. I can dress the way I want and act the way I want. It’s given me a newfound freedom of expression. I have become more independent learning to figure things out and finding myself.

What would you tell your first-year self now?

Things get tough, but that doesn’t mean you give up and stop trying. I would remind myself what it is I am here for… which is to be a better version of myself and be a role model for my nieces.
