14th Annual Honor Band Concert

Shepherd Salon Series—Josh Walker

Award-winning guitarist and composer Joshua Walker has performed with artists such as McCoy Tyner, Oliver Lake, Jon Irabagon, Steve Wilson, Sheryl Bailey, Joe Byrd, Gary Thomas, Ritchie Cole, Warren Wolf, and pop star Jason Mraz. He has been a member of groups that have opened concerts for artists such as Randy Brecker, Donny McCaslin, Pat LaBarbara, and Charlie Byrd and the Washington Guitar Quintet. W. H. Pirates of Penzance
Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera opens with Frederic, an orphan who has (on his twenty-first birthday) fulfilled the obligations of his erroneous apprenticeship to a band of rough and somewhat inept pirates. After disavowing his pirates’ life, he falls in love with Mable, daughter of the “Modern Major” General Stanley. When the Pirate King uncovers General Stanley’s lie to save his fortune (and daughters) from being spirited away, the plot thickens. This operetta is full of delightful songs and comic twists that will entertain the entire family. Frank Center Theater. $15 general admission, $10 faculty, staff. Shepherd Jazz Festival Concert

The Shepherd University Jazz Festival is an educational experience open to middle school and high school jazz ensembles of any size. Performing ensembles receive an individual clinic with our one of our adjudicators in addition to written and recorded comments. There will also be jazz clinics for individual instruments and master classes in jazz improvisation.

A rising force on the jazz scene and an award-winning Origin Records recording artist, pianist and composer Danny Green has distinguished himself with his beautifully articulated touch and melodically charged sensibility. His Original compositions – a vivid blend of jazz, classical, and Brazilian elements – delights critics and audiences across the country and around the world. Over the past decade, Danny Green has earned recognition as a bandleader possessing a lyrically charged vision and as a composer with a gift for spinning supple, absorbing narratives. full chamber jazz melding of his working band and a highly responsive string quartet. Masterworks Chorale with The Shepherd Wind Ensemble
Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth
Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The Masterworks Chorale, the Eastern Panhandle’s premier vocal ensemble, under the direction of Rachel Carlson, along with the Shepherd Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will perform the East Coast premiere of Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth, an original six-movement composition sung in Ilkorin, one of the Elvish languages of Middle Earth. Frank Arts Center Theater. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 faculty, staff and seniors, students age 18 & under.

Shepherd Community Orchestra and Youth Chorus

During Music Visitation Day, open to all high school seniors and juniors who are considering a pursuing a degree in music at Shepherd University, students will attend classes, meet the music faculty and current students, visit with representatives from the Admission’s Office, hear ensemble rehearsals and performances, have lunch in the Dining Hall and take a guided campus tour. It will be an opportunity for students to live a “day in the life” of a Shepherd University music student and learn about the audition and application process. 10:00 a.m. recital in W. H. Shipley Recital Hall. Free and open to the public.
