With the help of about 30 people at the Solar Solutions for West Virginia workshop on September 19th, the Shepherd University IES department now sports a fully functional solar photovoltaic (PV) array! The recently constructed barn has been fitted with 10 PV panels which are currently powering the barn; off-grid! Check out the progress below!

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the workshop and congratulations to the Shepherd University IES!

New Degree in Environmental Sustainability!

The non-comprehensive concentration in environmental sustainability provides students with a strong background in environmental studies, with an emphasis on sustainability.  The program explores ways of meeting humans’ current and future needs for energy, food, and shelter that are scientifically, socially, and economically viable and that do not compromise earth’s resources and ecological systems.  Students develop a specific research problem and acquire hands-on training through a required internship.  Students also select a minor in a complementary field, enabling them to tailor their degree to future employment or further study of sustainable living solutions at the graduate level.

Institute for Environmental Studies 'Veggie Van'

A team of Shepherd students completed a biodiesel conversion of a GMC Vandura.   The Veggie Van has been donated to the department and will serve as a test vehicle for recycled vegetable oil based fuels.
