SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Veterans Organization has purchased five new service flags that can be used for commencement, the annual Veterans Day program and for other holidays and events. The flags represent the branches of the U.S. military—the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Chris Barnhart, Student Veterans Organization president, said the group raised about $1,300 by working concession stands during sporting events and selling hand-woven blue and gold key fobs and bracelets before this year’s homecoming game. The flags cost $900 and Barnhart said the rest of the money will be used to support events sponsored by the organization.

Barnhart said members of the group worked hard to raise the money to buy the flags.

“It’s a standing display of the veterans’ presence on campus and something we’ve wanted to do for awhile,” he said.
