Updates on the Presidential Search

September 16, 2015

Dear Members of the Shepherd Community,

With the Fall semester underway, we would like to provide you with an update regarding the status of the Presidential Search.  With the assistance of Academic Search, the Presidential Search Committee has been working over the summer to review applications, and we are very encouraged by the excellent progress that has been made so far.  The Committee met with the consultants last month and began the process of reviewing applications.  We have a large applicant pool with many strong candidates.  Although candidates can continue to apply, our preferred deadline for full consideration was September 7, and the Committee is now focused on identifying a moderate number of semi-finalists.  The entire membership of the Committee is fully engaged and contributing in this process, which we expect to complete during the next week.  The Committee plans to meet with the semi-finalists in off-campus interviews in October.

Looking ahead, the Presidential Search Committee expects to be in a position to invite finalists for on-campus interviews in very late October, when the entire Shepherd community will have an opportunity to meet the finalists and provide feedback to the Committee and the Board of Governors.  Your participation in that process is important, so please maintain maximum flexibility in the last week of the month of October.  We will continue to update the Search Committee website with announcements regarding the dates of those interviews, as well as further progress updates.

The Presidential Search Committee held a meeting on May 18 to approve the position profile and the job advertisement.  The Committee also confirmed a consensus as to the prospective advertising plan.

Dr. Jessica Kozloff and Dr. Eric Richtmyer of Academic Search, Inc. visited Shepherd University on April 23-24, and spent time with members of the Shepherd community to learn about the culture of Shepherd and what will be expected of the new President.  Additional feedback was collected in subsequent emails submitted to them.  On behalf of the Board of Governors and the Presidential Search Committee, I would like to express our gratitude to those members of the Shepherd community who took the time to meet with the search firm and share their valuable insights.  Based on that feedback, Dr. Kozloff and Dr. Richtmyer prepared  a detailed position profile and job advertisement.

The Search Committee provided extensive additional input during the meeting in finalizing the position profile and  job advertisement.  The profile and advertisement will be available on the Presidential Search website in the coming weeks once the formal, national advertising process begins.  Once they become available, please feel free to share the profile and advertisement with any potential candidates that you may know.  Nominations, applications and expressions of interest can be made in confidence by contacting Dr. Kozloff or Dr. Richtmyer directly at ShepherdPresident@academic-search.com, or by calling 202-332-4049.

Between now and September 2015, the search firm and the Search Committee will collaborate on the confidential work of the search process as committee members review and evaluate applications.  We hope to bring finalists for campus interviews in October 2015.  More specific information regarding participation in the on-campus interviews by the Shepherd community will be shared as the interview dates approach.

The next planned update on the search process will be made in the Fall semester.  It will provide a general progress report and an update on the search timeline.

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the Presidential Search Committee, I would like to thank everyone who was able to participate in last week’s sessions with representatives from Academic Search, the firm we have engaged to assist us in our search for the next president of Shepherd University.  The sessions proved fruitful for the search consultants, and will inform their work as they begin to craft the search profile and related advertisements.

If you were unable to participate in the sessions and would like to suggest characteristics and attributes that should be considered for this search, you may do so by emailing president@shepherd.edu or by contacting your constituency member(s) of the search committee.  The members and the constituency groups being represented are:

The Shepherd University Board of Governors had a special meeting on March 31, 2015. Dr. Shipley has been formally designated as the next president at Midwestern State in Texas and will conclude her service at Shepherd mid-summer.

The Board has adopted a set of Search Procedures as required by State law. Those procedures will be forwarded to the Higher Education Policy Commission for approval at that level, also. These procedures include a delineation of the Search Committee composition. The Board has also agreed to use an external firm to assist both with the designation of an interim president, whose work would begin immediately with Dr. Shipley’s departure, and also with the entire search process for a new president.

This dedicated website will have full information about the membership of the Search Committee, the Search Procedures and the Search firm. The work of the Search Committee will begin soon, with campus meetings during the month of April to solicit input as to the Characteristics and Qualities desired for the next president. The Search Committee will continue during the summer, advertising the position on a national scale. The Search process will include public meetings on campus with finalists for the position, which are likely to occur before the Thanksgiving holiday period.
