Shepherd University to host watercolor exhibition

Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Scarborough Library will host an exhibition of watercolors by Shepherd alumnus Bob Wantz from Thursday, May 19-Friday, July 29. A reception will be held Friday, June 3 from 3-5 p.m. in the Scarborough Library.

For the past several years Wantz has been an art instructor at Hagerstown Community College and with the Washington County Fine Arts Museum. He has won critical recognition and numerous awards including the 1982 Leone B. Hamilton Best in Show Award at the Evans Run Artist Exhibit, the 2001 Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust Purchase Award for the 69th Cumberland Valley Artist Exhibition, and he was awarded the Hilltop House Best in Show at his first exhibition in 1973. Wantz is a signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and his works are in numerous private and corporate collections including the State House in Annapolis, Maryland.

A 1955 graduate of Shepherd, Wantz earned an A.B. in biology and a B.S. in education. He went on to study at Western Maryland College and received his M.Ed. in administration and supervision. Wantz began his career in education as a teacher in Williamsport, Maryland, and then became the vice principal of Williamsport Middle School. He retired from the Washington County Public School System after 16 years as principal of Clear Spring Middle School. Wantz remains active at Shepherd, where he serves on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, the Logo Committee, and was a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee for three years.
