(Performing Arts Series at Shepherd to present Viento de Agua Sept. 16)

Shepherdstown, WV--The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd University will present Viento de Agua, a Latin dance band on Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center Theater.

Viento de Agua combines traditional Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms of bomba and plena and other Afro-Caribbean rhythms with jazz. The result is an explosive and creative contemporary sound.

Based in New York, Viento de Agua was created by three young Puerto Ricans musicians in 1997. Percussionist and singer Hector "Tito" Matos is a native Puerto Rican and has performed in numerous music groups in Puerto Rico and New York. Music director, arranger, and reedman Ricardo Pons studied classical music at Boston Conservatory. Arranger and reedman Alberto Toro studied at Boston's Berklee School of Music. Both Pons and Toro received their master's degrees at Queens College under the instruction of jazz legend Jimmy Heath.

Viento de Agua won the prestigious SUNSHINE award in 2000 for Best Caribbean Tropical Album and has performed at Wolf Trap Jazzfest, Lincoln Centeršs Outdoors and Midnight Swing Series, and at the Smithsonian's Folklife Festival.

This program is made possible by a grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for senior citizens, Shepherd faculty/staff, or Jefferson County public school employees; $5 for kids under 18; and free to Shepherd students with a valid Rambler Card while supplies last.
