Shepherdstown, WV--The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University has announced the winner of the 2005 Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship. The book, titled After the Glory: The Struggles of Black Civil War Veterans, was written by Donald R. Shaffer, a history teacher at the University of Northern Colorado. In After the Glory, Shaffer chronicles the postwar transition of black veterans from the Union army, as well as their subsequent life patterns, political involvement, family and marital life, experiences with social welfare, comradeship with other veterans, and memories of the war itself.

Dr. Mark A. Snell, director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University, will present the $5,000 prize and commemorative plaque to Shaffer during the Center's annual Civil War seminar held at the university.

Shaffer will offer an overview of the book on Wednesday, June 22 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Byrd Center for Legislative Studies, located in the Scarborough Library on the Shepherd University campus. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event, and the author will be on hand for questions and autographs. A reception and book signing will follow at the Conrad Shindler House, 136 West German Street, Shepherdstown. This event is free and open to the public. For more information call the George Tyler Moore Center at 304/876-5429.

The Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship was established in 1998 to celebrate the life and interests of Peter Seaborg, son of Nobel Prize winner Glenn Seaborg. The award is designed to encourage the publication of Civil War history of unique perspective and superior quality. The George Tyler Moore Center is part of the Department of History at Shepherd University and administers the prize for the Seaborg Family.
