(Shepherd students to hold radon education program at Potomack Intermediate Apr. 11)
Shepherdstown, WV--In cooperation with the Berkeley County Health Department, students in the Community Health class at Shepherd University will present a radon education program to fourth-graders at Potomack Intermediate School in Martinsburg on Monday, April 11 at 10 a.m.
The program will provide free home testing kits, courtesy of the Berkeley County Health Department, for interested parents. "We are excited to work with the Health Department to promote radon awareness in Berkeley County," said Alyssa Rowe, Shepherd student.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that seeps out of rocks and soil. According to Dr. Diana Gaviria, health officer, 63 percent of homes in Berkeley County may have excessive levels of radon gas. Exposure does not produce immediate symptoms and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
For more information about the radon education programs, contact Carolyn Thomas, visiting assistant professor, health, physical education, recreation, and sports, at 304/876-5586 or cthomas@shepherd.edu.
